The DSG7 transmission is a type of dual-clutch automatic transmission developed by Volkswagen Group, which is also known as Direct-Shift Gearbox. It uses two separate clutch packs for odd and even gears, allowing for faster and smoother gear changes than a traditional automatic transmission.
The DSG7 is a seven-speed transmission, meaning it has seven forward gears, and it is commonly found in Volkswagen, Audi, and other vehicles within the Volkswagen Group. It is known for its quick and precise gear changes and improved fuel efficiency compared to traditional automatic transmissions.
However, like other types of automatic transmissions, the DSG7 can be susceptible to wear and tear, which may lead to costly repairs if not properly maintained. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule and have the transmission inspected and serviced as needed to ensure reliable performance.

Currently, the world of transmission is dominated in Europe by manual gearboxes and in the USA and Japan by automatic gearboxes. Both types of gearboxes have specific advantages and disadvantages.
The advantages of a manual gearbox are, for example,
• high degree of efficiency
• robust and sporty characteristics.
The advantages of an automatic gearbox are, for example,
• a high level of comfort, above all in gear changes, as there is no interruption in tractive power.
This formed the framework for Volkswagen to combine both transmission concepts into one completely new gearbox generation: the direct shift gearbox.
The Direct Shift Gear Transmission (DSG) also known as Dual Clutch Transmission(DCT) or twin-clutch transmission, is an automated transmission that can change gears faster than any other geared transmission. Dual-clutch transmissions deliver more power and better control than a traditional automatic transmission and faster performance than a manual transmission. Modern DSG automatic gearboxes use a pair of clutches in place of a single unit to help you change gear faster than a traditional manual or automatic alternative. Cars with DSG gearboxes don’t feature a clutch pedal and are controlled in exactly the same way as a conventional automatic. Direct Shift Gear transmission (DSG) also called as Dual Clutch Transmissions (DCTs) are providing the full shift comfort of traditional step automatics but offer significantly improved full efficiency and performance. Fuel efficiency increased by 15% compared to planetary-ATs, the DCTs are the first automatics to provide better values than manual transmissions. Higher top speed and, more important in everyday driving, better acceleration compared to planetary-ATs and CVTs are additional benefits.

Is the S Tronic a manual gearbox or an automatic gearbox?
It is both. The S Tronic is an automatic sport gearbox with an emphasis on “Sport”.
The technical basis of the S Tronic is a 6-speed manual gearbox which, as a special feature, has two clutches (twin-clutch).
Clutch control and gearshifts are performed by an electro-hydraulic control.
A twin multi-plate clutch and intelligent electro-hydraulic control are used allowing two gears to be selected simultaneously.
While driving, one gear is engaged and the matching gear is preselected.
During gearshifts, the clutch engaging the active gear opens while the other clutch of the preselected gear closes. This is done under load and so quickly that power flow is virtually continuous.
The S Tronic 6-speed twin-clutch gearbox is more dynamic than a conventional manual gearbox because it allows fast gear-shifting without any interruption in tractive power while affording the comfort of an automatic gearbox.
In addition to the overtly sporty driving dynamics, the S Tronic gearbox is highly efficient. This gives it an advantage over the conventional manual gearbox with regard to fuel economy.
